Roots in Lawndale

A lifelong educator, raised right here at home

Bonnie Coronado was raised in Lawndale. Her father passed away when she was young, and her mother raised her and her two siblings as a single parent — an experience that taught her early just how much before- and after-school care can mean for a family, a lesson she has carried into every year she's served on the school board.

She is a product of Lawndale's own public schools and a graduate of Leuzinger High School. From there she earned her Associate's Degree at El Camino College, transferred to UCLA to complete her Bachelor's degree, and later went back to earn a teaching credential from Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Bonnie spent 19 years working at Northrop Grumman, a major aerospace company, before she made the decision to return to school and pursue her true passion — teaching. Today, she still teaches at the elementary level — she has taught Kindergarten through 4th grade at Compton Unified School District, and speaks Spanish with many of the families she serves.

Outside the classroom, Bonnie has stayed close to school life through the School Site Council and PTA at every school in Lawndale, supporting fundraisers and after-school programs. She previously worked for Lawndale Parks and Recreation, where she helped start the city's holiday camps, and helped sponsor an outdoor science school for Lawndale students. She also worked with the City of Lawndale to establish shared use of the city's parks for community events, including the Egg Hunt and the Jazz Festival.

Looking ahead

Bonnie's vision for the next term

  • Explore new ways to grow enrollment

Convene a taskforce and study session to explore approaches such as project-based learning, magnet school and academy school models, and expanding Dual Immersion at Addams.

  • Every student reading by 3rd grade

Make it a district-wide goal that every student is reading at grade level by the end of 3rd grade — the foundation for everything that follows.

  • Keep raising academic achievement

Build on the district's recent gains and continue pushing scores upward at every school site.

  • Address students' social-emotional needs

Continue prioritizing the support services that help students feel safe, seen, and ready to learn.

  • Grow art programs in every school

Expand access to art instruction as a core part of every child's education, not an extra.

  • Maintain strong student-to-teacher ratios

Protect the classroom sizes that let teachers give every student the attention they need.
